(American Heart Association) One in seven patients 65 or older undergoing non-heart surgery experienced heart cell damage during or after surgery, known as perioperative myocardial injury (PMI). Deaths of patients with PMI were six times higher in the 30 days following surgery compared to patients without PMI.
